Global Cocaine Seizure Trend Report 2011 – A Deeper Insight

ROME (March 5, 2012) - For the first time in the history of the “war on drugs”, detailed daily data on cocaine seizures are available, although not definitive yet. Thanks to the investigative work of Narcoleaks, it has been possible to analyze in depth the trend of cocaine seizures worldwide throughout all 2011. Through these data we can better understand the different aspects of drug trafficking and, in particular, anticipate the emerging trends. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will provide aggregate data for the entire 2011 only in one year and a half from now. In the meantime, several phenomena will have changed their course.

Cocaine Seized Worldwide Highest Ever in 2011

774.707 metric tons of high purity cocaine have been seized by police forces worldwide in 2011. It is a record unparalleled by the annual amounts of cocaine seized during previous years. The data definitively prove that the world production estimate of cocaine provided by the U.S. State Department (700 metric tons) is wrong. Narcoleaks is still waiting for a valid answer to its five questions addressed to U.S. President Barack Obama. But the time of lies is over: truth can’t wait.

Obama’s lies about the international cocaine trade

The amount of cocaine seized in 2011 has outstripped the estimate of world cocaine production provided by the U.S. Department of State. Despite the opposing official viewpoint of the U.S., Colombia is still the world leader of cocaine production, and even the U.S. Coast Guard proved the White House’s figures wrong. ONDCP – White House: Narcoleak’s report “systematically flawed”, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)

NARCOLEAKS: ONDCP’s reply to Narcoleaks’ analysis is highly insufficient and does not clarify the doubts that were raised. Another contradiction: General Douglas M. Fraser’s estimate of world cocaine flow in 2008 was between 1,200 and 1,400 metric tons.

The difference between governments and drug cartels

Every year the UNODC and the U.S. State Department show us with their data that the global production and trafficking of cocaine is steadily decreasing. That would sound encouraging, if it was true. A report by the scientific director of Narcoleaks Sandro Donati, published online by FLARE, a network of civil society organisations committed to social struggle against transnational organised crime. Founded in 2008 and based in Italy, FLARE is composed of 38 NGOs from 25 countries across Europe, the Mediterranean basin, Caucasus and the Balkans. Read more.

UNODC replies to the doubts on the official data

Rome, Italy – Yuri Fedotov, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), replies to the doubts on the official data on cocaine production raised by Narcoleaks during his official visit to Italy. The press conference took place at Palazzo Chigi, seat of the Italian Government. On June 23, Fedotov presented the new World Drug Report in New York. For the second consecutive year, the report does not provide any precise estimate concerning the global production of cocaine in 2009 and 2010. According to UNODC, experts are at work to release new data on global production. However, production in 2010 is estimated at somewhere between 786 and 1,054 tons, with a difference of 268 metric tons of cocaine, which would correspond to the hypothetical production of a single Latin American country.
